Climate change and energy

We look at every aspect of our value chain to reduce our energy consumption.

The challenges posed by climate change affect us all – and each of us has a part to play in being more energy efficient.

At Inditex, we have been developing ways to improve our energy use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions since the early 1990s. But over the years, the scope of our commitments has only grown and the level of our activities has intensified. 30% of our global energy consumption comes from clean sources. 

We look at every aspect of our value chain to find improvements, from raw materials and design to manufacturing and logistics, from our stores and offices to how our products are used and what happens to them when they are no longer needed.

Carbon Disclosure Project named Inditex as a leader on climate change

How we approach this is outlined in our Global Energy Strategy, which forms part of our overarching vision of sustainability running through all our business operations. Our work includes:

  • reducing energy use and implementing low-carbon technologies in our own stores, offices and logistics centres
  • supporting energy efficiency and reduction in our supply chain with our partners
  • designing more sustainable products, taking into account each item’s energy requirements in manufacture and use
  • encouraging customers to use our products more efficiently through improved labelling
  • promoting reuse and recycling of garments and fibres

To achieve this we are embracing technological advances, choosing low-energy materials, scrutinising our processes for efficiency, and seeking to apply improvements wherever possible.

Our commitment to fight against the Climate Change has been recognised by Carbon Disclosure Project and the CDP Climate Leadership Awards 2016.

Our commitment with energy saving, in numbers:
  • We reduced electricity consumption for each garment put on the market by 14% in our logistic centers, headquarters and own factories.
  • 30% of our energy consumption comes from clean sources.
  • We reduced electricity consumption for each garment put on the market by 12% in our stores.
