ENTRECULTURAS EDUCATION PROGRAMMES
We support Entrecultura's long-term projects in Latin America, Africa and Middle East.
We have funded 46 education programmes run by Entreculturas since 2001, directly benefiting 1 million people. Our long term agreement with this non-profit organisation has been extended to 2019, with a contribution of €9.8 million driving 22 new projects designed to support 165,000 people.
The three-year EPGO programme began in 2014 with two key objectives. Fist, to deliver the vocational training needed to lift people out of poverty and to provide care. Secondly, to support education focused initiatives for those who need them the most.
In Latin America, EPGO projects have been set up in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Work is centred on vulnerable groups, such as the indigenous population, people with disabilities, young people at risk of social exclusion, migrants and refugees.
In Africa, EPGO efforts are focused on getting help to 114,800 people displaced by war and persecution in Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa and Uganda.
In refugee camps, we are supporting education and social integration in the face of emergency and crisis with the provision of education and literacy programmes for women and children. Refugees in large urban centres also receive access to professional training, language training, medical care and legal support.
From now on, EPGO will also help 2,400 Syrian children in Lebanon.
Since 2007 have been working closely with Entreculturas to help people affected by the conflict in Colombia.
Our latest three-year programme ‘On the Colombian Borders’ launched in 2015 and offers education, technical and food safety training, as well as psychological and legal assistance to 6,000 displaced people in Colombia, Panama, Ecuador and Venezuela.
A key aim is to break the cycle of violence through the provision of education for young people with the purpose of securing their eventual integration into the labour market, away from groups associated with the conflict.
