In early 2014, Inditex was one of the first global fashion retailers to partner the environmental non-profit organisation Canopy to stop ancient and endangered forests being felled to make wood-based fibres. Through this partnership we developed our Forest Product Policy, and work towards its goals through traceability and transparency of the supply chain, sustainable sourcing, encouraging governments to conserve the world’s ancient and endangered forests, and innovation in the use of recycled and alternative fibre sources for fabric.
Caritas is the official confederation of the Catholic Church’s charity organisations operating in more than 200 countries and territories across the world. We have been helping their international work since 2008 on relief and community development programmes in Bangladesh and Cambodia, raising living standards and the health and education levels of deprived communities. In Spain, our partnership has been focused on the social integration of vulnerable groups through employment programmes, and helping us sort donated old clothing for recycling, reuse or repair.
CEO Water Mandate
Our membership of The CEO Water Mandate since 2011 demonstrates our commitment to reduce the impact of the textile industry’s demands on water resources. The CEO Water Mandate is part of the UN Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. We followed The CEO Water Mandate’s guidelines when we developed the core principles of our Global Water Management Strategy, which outlines our approach to responsible water use and the protection of marine and freshwater habitats.
Fur Free Alliance
The Fur Free Alliance (FFA) is an international coalition of animal protection organisations working to end the exploitation and killing of animals for their fur, and the deprivation and cruelty suffered by fur-bearing animals in the wild and in farming. The FFA facilitates the Fur Free Retailer programme, which we signed up to in 2013, as part of our commitment to the ethical and responsible treatment of animals. Inditex brands do not sell fur, according to the Fur Free Retailer programme’s strict definition of what constitutes fur.
Organic Cotton Accelerator
Recognising the challenges facing the organic cotton sector, Inditex became a founding partner of the Organic Cotton Accelerator (OCA) to help create a prosperous organic cotton sector which benefits everyone from farmer to consumer. Organic cotton has clear environmental and social benefits, but many farmers do not get access to quality organic cotton seeds, nor the prices that reward growing it. The OCA is a multi-stakeholder initiative developing solutions that will be scaled and implemented across the sector from 2018.
Sustainable Apparel Coalition
The Sustainable Apparel Coalition is an alliance of like-minded apparel and footwear companies committed to reducing their environmental footprint and making a positive impact on communities where they operate. We joined in 2011 and are actively involved in developing the coalition’s core focus, the Higg Index, used to measure sustainability performance at all stages of production, to identify opportunities for improvement and help consumers to choose sustainable products.
